Ethernet recommendation
Most students in campus residences are able to connect to the campus
network using ethernet connections, which are many times faster than
dialup modems. Refer to the Division of Housing DHNet web page for
more information. In addition, many ethernet connections are being
installed in campus labs, classrooms, libraries and other public places
to accommodate students with notebook computers. Student computers
which connect in residence halls and other campus network ports must
meet these requirements: the ethernet card must provide a 10baseT
connection (uses twisted-pair wire with an RJ-45 jack). It is strongly
recommended that network cards work with network interface drivers
provided by Microsoft Windows. Standard brands of cards used on campus
include 3COM, Intel, and SMC. If a network card is installed by a
dealer, ask them to test it in a live Ethernet network to ensure that
it is correctly installed.
Wireless networking on campus
Wireless networking is a relatively new area in computer network technology
that offers unique opportunities in education, research, and administration.
Wireless networks give users mobility and flexibility by enabling
them to access network services without being tied to a physical location.
Many devices and applications are being developed to take advantage
of these new capabilities. To offer the potential benefits of this
service to the University of Florida community we are in the process
of deploying a campus wide wireless network. You can connect to the
UF Network with a laptop if you have a wireless network card. Wireless
network cards should conform to the 802.11b standard, and carry the
'WiFi' logo to insure compatibility with the UF network. Check the
web page at http://net-services.ufl.edu/wireless
for a coverage map and additional information about the technology.
